Hoe is Huis ter Swinnendael ontstaan? deel 3. - How does Huis ter Swinnendael come into existence? part 3.

Hollands Classicisme, Ingetogen Barok! - Dutch Classicism, restraint Baroque!

Een eerder ontwerp - A design that hasn't made it.
Een terugblik - Looking back.

In july and august I have shown you my sketches for dollshouses in a Georgian style, and a design for a Gothic castle. I have had a lot of fun, drawing these buildings but I realised that, for me, both styles had a few setbacks.
  1. While sketching a few façades I realised I wanted a Dutch building instead of a foreign one. I really love English and French architectural styles. But this time it had to be something Dutch.
  2. The mediëval castle I had designed, would be far too big if built in 1 inch scale. At the same time I felt that the interior would be to Spartan for me to enjoy making it.

Besides that, I would love my house to be in a way an ( albeit a very modest) echo of the stunning and well known babyhouses of the 17th and 18th century, which can be found in several Dutch museums. But a difference with those houses is that my house will not look like cabinet but like a proper building. Or at least that will be my intention.

Architectuurstijl - Architectural style.

But now that I have finaly decided that it will be a dutch architectural style, which will I use? If we simplify history a little there are three major styles from the renaissance towards 1806, the year wherein my house will be situated.

Hollands Classicisme, Mauritshuis.

At the end of the Renaissance Dutch Classicism emerged. The style harks back to the architecture of Roman antiquity and was marked by sobriety and restraint. Besides the Mauritshuis, the Royal Palace in Amsterdam is also a good example.

At the end of the 17th century this develops into the so called "strakke stijl." It was reminiscent of the baroque of Louis XIV but without most of the flourishes of that style. An important difference with earlier buildings is the absence of pilasters and quoining. Thus the windows are solely set in brick walls.

Neo Classicisme, Kasteel Verwolde.

In the second half of the 18th century the neoclassicism emerges and fashion returns to the clean lines of classicism after the exuberance of the Baroque and Rococo. This time however the rules are aplied more loosely and more influences form France and England are visible.

As I have said earlier, the house will be set in the year 1806, during the founding of the kingdom Holland. When the Batavian Republic ceised do exist and Before Napoleon made us part of the French Empire.  But the house predates 1806 so I can choose my favorite of the three styles I have described. The pictures below will show you wat it will look like.

And here are the final drawings. The design is based on the Strakke stijl, more specific on the work of Jacob Roman and Daniël Marot. They are alson known for their work on the royal palace of Het Loo. A later generation of inhabitants has added the quoining on the corners to modernise the building. The back will remain open for easy access. I will make doors in the facades on the side to gain access to the rooms in front of the house. The middle part of the front facade will also open to give access to the hall and the staircase.

Het huis beslaat vier verdiepingen:

The house will have vour floors.

-The celar, with a hall (1), the larder(2), the scullery(3), the servants hall(4), the kitchen(5) and a room for the steward(6).

-The Beletage houses the hall with staircase(7), the lower part of the art gallery(8), the large (music) drawingroom(9), the  diningroom(10) and te small drawingroom(11).

- The second floor houses the upper parts of the hall with the staircase(7) and the art gallery(8), the yellow bedchamber(12), the dressingroom or cabinet(13), the library(14) and the blue bedroom(15).

- In the attic there will be a linnenroom(16), a storageroom(17) and a servants bedchamber(18). The restof this floor is taken up by the light dome above the art gallery and the raised ceilings of the hall and the yellow bedchamber.

That makes a total of 18 rooms of different sizes that all need an interior. Heavens, what have I begun? :-)

For the interior there is much more choice. There are some typical Dutch and flemish pieces of furniture but fashionable french and english furniturestyles were also very popular. But that is for another post.
