Hello my friends,
This weekend I attended the workshop for painting miniature porcelain given by Cocky Wildschut. After two years without workshops due to Covid-19, it was so wonderful to be able to take a class again! Pure bliss. We were with a small group who knows each other well. We had a lot to chat about while working on our projects, as you may understand. đ
Since I had prepared both tableaux in advance, I could almost immediately start with tracing the pencil lines with so called porcelain ink. When the tiles are fired at 800+ centigrade the graphite of the pencil will burn away without a trace. So we don't have to worry about the pencil marks being visible here and there.
Both tableaux together consist of 112 tiles. And this means a lot of little lines. My goal for the workshop was to trace all pencil lines with the porcelain ink. This is not regular writing ink. It is porcelain paint, a mixture of oils and pigment, but here in a different combination than the mixture used for filling in and adding schades of colour to the inked drawings.
It was a close call to reach this goal in one go. But I made it! Both Maurits and Hendrick looking blue! đ
But I'm only half way where colour is concerned. Next time I will start with the first schades of colour to parts which will need it. Some will remain light like the hair and beards of these chaps. Others will be darker, like the dark patchess under the tables. Those will need multiple layers to get the right depth of colour.
But that's for a next workshop. Be well and stay safe.

Wow Huibrecht! This process is just fascinating! The boys look amazing, so far, and I am so excited to learn and see the next steps! I am also so happy to hear that you enjoyed the class - catching up with old friends has a whole new depth of meaning nowadays. Your pencil must have been going lightning fast, but the lines look impeccable!
ReplyDeleteHi Jodi, thank you! Catching up with old friends has indeed a new depth of meaning after two years of pandemic. Unfortunately it is not yet over although restrictions ar thankfully not necessary at this moment.
DeleteI hardly took a pause in between strokes, that I can tell you. :-) But I could not rush it or the result of a days work would have looked very shabby indeed.

¡Que maravilla de trabajo! y ¡que maravilla poder reunirse para realizar y comentar tantas cosas bonitas en este mundo mini!
ReplyDeleteMuchas Gracias, Rosa Maria.

Hi Huibrecht! I see you made great use of your workshop time! What wonderfully perfect painting you manage to do! The next layers of "washes" to create the shading will be tricky and challenging, but I am sure you will succeed! I really look forward to seeing these tiles gracing that magnificent fireplace! What a treat the workshop must have been! Keep up the great work! :):):)
ReplyDeleteYes, washes! that's the word I was looking for! thank you. The workshop was delightful! So good to get together again and share our love of miniatures.

It makes me happy that you've been able to enjoy your workshop - or the first part of it. And what fun that you knew the other participants as it's always lovely to see fellow hobbyist or even friends again. The royal tiles turned out awesome so far and I'm already looking forward to see them next after you've added the shades of blue. and it was interesting to learn about the porcelain ink.

Hi Birgit, You are absolutely right. We held contact through social media and an occasional phone call. But being in the room with each other talking and laughing is so much better. Not that I attend many workshops, but an interlude of 2 years is a bit much.
DeleteI am glad that you liked the post about the porcelain ink.
