Hello my friends,
The 'rugged' in the title of this post was only put there for the purpose of alliteration. There is little, if anything, rugged about miniature embroidery! If anything it is delicate and detailed. No?
In the pictures above and below you see the work of Henriëtte. These carpets I bought off of her in a Dutch facebook group where people sell second hand or self made miniatures. Often what is offered there is of little to no interest to me because it usually does not fit in the time window for Huis ter Swinnendael. . But once in a while something beautiful and very worthwhile comes along there. The difficulty then is to be the first to respond. I'm not glued to facebook and di check that group sometimes but certainly not daily. But when I saw these beauties I was in luck. And the prices were more than reasonable.
These two are made from patterns in a book on Eastern carpets. Henriëtte and I got off on a friendly footing together, she is a very kind lady and an accomplished embroiderist. Then I remembered that I stil had a THOM kit for a miniature carpet lying around. It was for a large Tabriz style carpet with hunters on horseback and jumping deer.
I bought it second hand a few years ago, but for an absolute novice in embroidery like me, it was foolish to think I could make an intricate design of thát scale. I had resigned myself to the idea that it would never be made. It had been laying around sealed in that bag for at least three decades now. So was it really that bad to leave it in there fore a few decades more?
Fortune favours the brave, dear reader, or so the saying goes. Not that I have been very brave for that matter. No. But I did ask if she was interested in making this kit for me. She loved the challenge and we soon reached an understanding on the price. Now do not think that, as a dutchman, I haggled the price down to the bare minimum. If anything I had to keep her from charging the materials only. She was so looking forward to trying her hands on this pattern. Luckily we came to a mutual satisfactory conclusion.
Although these kits come with all materials supplied the wool had dried out so as to easily pull it apart. It could no longer be used. She tried but it kept breaking constantly. Instead she used the same colours from dmc. And only two months later Henriëtte had finished the entire carpet. It measures 8 by 10 inches, or 20 by 25 centimeters. Quite large but a realistic size. Luckily Huis ter Swinnendael as mostly large rooms so that they will fit in every room size wise.
As you may know, dear reader I have collected quite a few books on miniatures, miniature making and (famous) dollshouses over the years. Including a few on period embroidery. I lent them to Henriëtte for her use. One of the carpet designs in the book about Georgian embroidery patterns in miniature was my favorite.
And it's this one. A design based on a Savonnerie carpet with flowers and ribbons. The design comes with a brown background but Henriëtte changed that in a dark blue background for me because that colourcwill fit better in the intended room. I only have to build the room now...

Dear Huibrecht, You are so Fortunate!!! Those carpets are gorgeous! But I must add.... I am envious! I have been coveting and searching for that carpet of the horsemen.... a tiny picture on the back of the kit I was given a few years ago.... I will design my own attempt of course, eventually, but if you are willing to sell me a copy of the stitching chart for the horsemen carpet.... I will be overjoyed! I am serious! And I will even tempt you with trades of other stitching? Lol! I have been storing away pictures of that carpet so someday I could attempt to make a chart of my own. But anyway, I am so glad you found someone who could do your stitching... it is not too difficult once you get a few techniques mastered... start small! Lol (With cushions.... hard to ruin them! ) I look forward to seeing more of yourrooms with carpets in them! :):):) (Please let me know about the chart?)
ReplyDeleteDear Betsy,
DeleteMoney will not need change hands! I would not dream of it. Ofcourse you can have the chart for this rug. If someone deserves the chance to make it, it is you. Your embroidery is excuisite, and I am always amazed how you alter and improve an already good embroidery kit.

I had seen photos of that carpet over the years, and I've worked a lot of miniature embroidery pieces. Personally, I much prefer using embroidery floss, as I've found that even Persian wool is too bulky for miniatures. The furnishings are so light that they won't stay upright on a wool carpet. There is a brand of British crewel wool that is supposed to be very fine, but it's not available here. Somewhere in my embroidery books is a very similar carpet to the Hunter one, I just have to find it.... You are lucky to have found Henriette!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the wool. Not that I have experience with it but it is much thicker than embroidery floss. It is easily too thick for miniature carpets and the likes. I am curious about the carpet you mean. And yes, I am very lucky to have found Henriëtte!

Hoi Huibrecht!
Heel fijn weekeinde, groetjes, Ilona
DeleteDe DHN-show was heel leuk maar druk.
DeleteI think this is meant with the saying "a match made in Heaven" - Henriette seems to be happy whenever she's able to create the most beautiful miniature embroidery patterns and you have the perfect challenges for her with the patterns you have in your stash. It was a brilliant idea to ask her if she would do this outstanding design for you and she created a masterpiece for your project. I also like this flower carpet very much, even more as I think it looks so much better with the blue background. And of course I hope you will be able to provide our friend Betsy with this special chart she was dreaming of for so long... after all this special holiday at the end of the year which shall not be named yet isn't that far away anymore... *tweet*

Birgit
That is exactly what it is, Birgit, a match made in heaven. She does not embroider exclusively for me, but her wanting to try new designs she has not made before is indeed my luck.
DeleteDo not fear on account of the Chart. Betsy and I have come to an arrangement. I would always sent her the chart because I would not want to keep it from here. And no money or counter performance was needed. We did however agree to swap charts. Betsy made a Heriz design from the same HOM carpet series a little while back. She is sending me that chart in return.
So I hope Betsy and I both have earned some points in the golden book of someone who shal not be named, connected to a certain celebration near the end of the year. :-)
